What Is a Pregnancy Test?
There are two types of pregnancy tests: urine and blood.
Most at-home pregnancy tests use urine to detect the presence of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), a hormone that starts to be produced about six days after fertilization. These tests collect urine on a test trip containing latex microbeads coated with an antibody specific to hCG. That means the test will return a positive result if hCG is present.
When you request to confirm pregnancy at a medical office or urgent care facility, they often conduct a blood test. Blood is drawn from your arm or wrist and tested for the presence of hCG. Blood tests can detect even tiny amounts of this hormone, allowing them to confirm pregnancy much earlier than at-home tests—often before a missed period.
When Should I Take a Pregnancy Test?
If you think you could be pregnant, it’s important to take a test to confirm. If you are pregnant, your healthcare provider will talk to you about beginning prenatal vitamins and making any necessary lifestyle habits to promote your and your baby’s health.
Many at-home tests can give you a positive test result as early as ten days after conception. However, for a more accurate result, wait until you’ve missed your period to test.
In general, the first morning urine is the best time to test because it has the highest concentration of hCG, making it easier to detect.
If you’ve had a positive at-home pregnancy test, we encourage you to follow up with a blood test at Alamo City Urgent Care.
